"From bank vault to bean vault." That's how Angie McCourt describes the branding behind Red Brick Coffee House, and the line tells you most of the building's history. The brick building at U.S. 41 and East Orange Avenue opened in 1905 as a bank. From 1915 to 1943 it was Floral City's post office. For about thirty years after it was built, people stopped in for daily business, first at a teller window and then at a mail counter.
The café would make it that kind of stop again. It's also the first business on the corner planned around early mornings.
A Building That Used to Be a Daily Errand
The Citrus County Chronicle reported the McCourts' plans on May 13, 2026. Here's how the Red Brick Place has been used over the years, according to that report:
- 1905: It opens as a bank.
- 1915 to 1943: It serves as Floral City's post office.
- The decades after: Secondhand stores, clothing shops and boutiques move through. The building outlasts several fires downtown.
- The boutique years: Longtime owner Laura Hennings runs a boutique that makes "Red Brick" the name locals use.
- June 2025: Angie and John McCourt buy the property from Hennings.
- 2026: Work begins on Red Brick Coffee House.
The paper includes a 1920 photo of the post office on Orange Avenue. In it are Mrs. Mattie D. Perry, postmaster for nearly 40 years, and her assistant, Mrs. W.R. Townsend. D. Louis Castel's Drug Store and Spiney's Pool Room are visible next door. That was a corner people visited every day for errands. The shops that followed served occasional visits. A café that opens early brings the daily kind back.
If the post office years caught your interest, the Floral City Heritage Council scheduled its September 23 Heritage Hour with the Floral City Library on the history of the Floral City Post Office. The talk traced "the letters, people, and stories that connected Floral City through the years."
What the Renovation Uncovered
The McCourts are both retired after more than 30 years in the tech industry. They told the Chronicle the project started with the building, and coffee came second. "When she put it up for sale, I went, 'Oh my gosh, it's for sale,'" Angie said. "I had no idea what we were going to do with it, but we have to be the new guardians."
When the drywall and drop ceilings came out, features no one had seen in generations were exposed. The original brick had been under plaster for more than 120 years. Cedar rafters now run overhead, a fireplace has been restored along one wall, and the old bank vault sits on the right side of the room. John McCourt plans to store coffee in the vault. He says its humidity stays under 30 percent. The crew even found an old tin beer can, probably many decades old, inside the walls.
Reaching this point took a lot of paperwork. The building had never operated as a restaurant, so a coffee shop counted as a change of use. That meant septic upgrades, accessibility improvements and several rounds of county review. Contractor Suzie Rise of Morgan Rise Custom Builder told the county's Historical Resources Advisory Board that the existing doors couldn't meet commercial ADA rules. The plan replaces the front double doors with a single compliant entrance and adds a rear door and an accessible ramp. The board approved it unanimously in April. "That was the final say," Angie said. The building department signed off about a week later.
The Morning Gap on Orange Avenue
The case for this café is easiest to see in the hours its neighbors post. Here's what's listed for the businesses within a short walk of the corner:
| Spot | Address | Listed hours |
|---|---|---|
| Red Brick Coffee House | 8305 E. Orange Ave. | Planned 7 a.m. to 2 p.m., closed Mondays |
| Floral City Hardware | 8328 E. Orange Ave. | Mon to Fri 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Sat 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., closed Sun |
| Florida Cracker Shamrock's | 8343 E. Orange Ave. | Tue to Sat 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., Sun 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., closed Mon |
| Floral City Heritage Museum & Country Store | 8394 E. Orange Ave. | Summer hours were Saturdays 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. through Aug. 29. Fall hours not yet posted |
Under its planned hours, Red Brick would open an hour before the hardware store and four hours before Shamrock's. It would close right around the time lunch gets going at the pub. Each business would cover a different part of the day. The hiring notice on the café's website lists barista shifts starting at 6:30 a.m., so the morning focus looks deliberate.
Shamrock's takes over later in the day with Southern and Irish pub food: fried gator, catfish, barbecue and Irish comfort dishes. The listed weekly specials are shepherd's pie on Tuesday, corned beef and cabbage on Wednesday, all-you-can-eat wings on Thursday and prime rib on Friday. The Heritage Council's restaurant directory notes that Florida Cracker's Shamrock is under new ownership. The museum down the street charges no admission. Tom Ritchie, the museum director, arranges private tours when the regular schedule doesn't work.
Planned Around the Trail
The Chronicle says the menu goes beyond coffee to tea, smoothies, protein drinks, refreshers, baked goods and trail-friendly snacks. The McCourts are aiming it at locals, snowbirds and cyclists on the nearby Withlacoochee State Trail. That ties the café to the town's most-used recreation route. Florida State Parks lists the trail as 47 miles long, free, and open from 8 a.m. to sunset. The agency also notes that Floral City's shops, restaurants and convenience stores sit just off the trail.
This Sunday, October 4, 2026, the Friends of the Withlacoochee State Trail hold their 28th Annual Ride, with a sag stop at the Floral City Trailhead, 8355 East Levey Road. When we checked, the volunteer page showed the Sag Stop Lead shifts for that stop as full. If you'd rather ride before the crowds or after them, our earlier piece on slow summer mornings on the Withlacoochee Trail through Floral City covers the quieter stretches.
Where the Opening Stands
The McCourts were aiming for an August opening. As of today, September 30, we haven't found a public announcement that the café is open. The website currently shows a "Now Hiring Baristas" page offering $16 to $20 an hour with tips, paid training, and no experience required. Before planning a morning around it, check the café's own channels for the opening date and final hours. The 7-to-2 schedule above comes from the May plan, so it may change.
Angie McCourt has described the atmosphere she wants: rustic, a deliberate change from the building's most recent modern interior. "I feel like we go through this portal when we come through the door," she told the Chronicle. "I think warmth. Chilling out. Relaxation." On one side of the building is a painted sign for the Avenue of Oaks. The Heritage Council treats that oak canopy as a defining landmark of the Floral City Historic District.
October Around the Corner
The Floral City Public Library is a few minutes away. Its October calendar is a good fit with a late-morning coffee once Red Brick opens:
- October 5, 4 to 6 p.m.: Dungeons & Dragons for adults and teens. Registration is required, and there are only eight seats.
- October 12: All Citrus Libraries branches close for staff training and reopen Tuesday, October 13.
- October 15, 1 to 2 p.m.: "Make Whatever!" teen craft buffet.
- October 27, 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.: STEAM Lab.
- October 29, 3 to 4 p.m.: A National Cat Day session for all ages where you make your own cat toy.
- October 30, 1 to 2 p.m.: "Eek! It's Craft Time!" for kids and teens, with registration required.
After that, the next big night on Orange Avenue is Candles, Carols, & Carriages on Friday, December 4, 2026, from 5:30 to 9 p.m., hosted by the Floral City Heritage Council. For more about the town beyond this corner, see our Floral City neighborhood page.
